"Just
Me &: My Pan,"
Tracy Thornton
*****
Tracy Thornton was the creative force between two successful
steel drum bands: Sons of Steel and Been Caught Steeling'. The
CD he produced with those groups proved his talent not just
for playing/-but for combining and cultivating others' talent.
Now, this drummer-turned-steel-drum-master is on his own. His
new CD, "Just Me & My Pan," showcases an extraordinary
musician, a mesmerizing instrument and an impressive variety
of music. Playing over sequenced tracks by Dave Lapio and Ross
McGinn us, Thornton plays the calypso for which the instruments
was created and much more. The CD's 14 selections also include
reggae, pop and even jazz. Music fans of all stripes will enjoy
his covers of familiar, popular his such as Santana's "Maria,
Maria," No Doubt's "Underneath it All," Bob Marley's
"No Woman No, Cry" and the reggae standard "Tide
is High." While the CD features plenty of up-tempo opportunities
to dance, it also has arrestingly beautiful ballads, including
a tender treatment of "Don't Know Why!" the Grammy-winning
song of the year Jesse Harris wrote for Norah Jones. Also pretty
is the bossa nova lilt of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Girl
From Ipanema." "Just Me & My Pan” as well
as his regular solo gig at the new Steak Street restaurant in
, Greensboro, demonstrate Thornton's ability to make great music
with or without a band.
